The Eiffel Tower project

Railroads and stations

As seen some of the bridges are used by the subway (they call it "Métro") and suburban rail as well. Working with those bridges I decided to model those lines as far as being beyond surface. I just wanted to create a proper unity, not having to restart with the same objects somewhere later.

The rail itself is a small element including some basement, one tie and a short part of tracks, multiplied and bent by array and curve modifier:

Métro lines are beyond street level in these areas, so we need a kind of substructure there as well. This is done by multiple iron bridge elements. I created one of them, duplicated and put them in place manually (which afforded only little tweaking):

Most of the stations are quite similar, following one design:

The exception from the rule: Gare Avenue du Président Kennedy:

... and of course Gare d'Austerlitz, located near the Eastern border of Inner Paris:

This one was a little hard to model: originally built in 1839/40 it was rebuilt and modificated within the last decades. Parts of the building have been broken down, others have been added (some of them in really modernistic style). It was hard to find enough reference on the web showing a half way similar state of being...
So I'm not sure if my model shows any realistic version. Generally speaking I decided to ignore the modernistic elements and concentrate on something that could have existed in the former times...
I love the way the Métro line passes through the building - seems like they had built the station around the rails ;-)

Another insteresting spot near Gare d'Austerlitz is a Métro station called "Quai de la Rapée", where the railroad passes a small channel:

The channel links the River Seine to a marina called "Port de l'Arsenal" and includes a watergate.
Wow! Paris is fascinating, isn't it? They have marinas located in the midth of their City! I didn't know about that before...
