The Eiffel Tower project

Prominent buildings #1

Of course Paris is full of them, and there are a lot nearby the Eiffel Tower.

I decided to start with the Ecole Militaire and the Trocadero, both framing the Champ de Mars at its ends. Added some more as they dragged my attention.

I won't describe too detailled how I did them - the modelling process was quite similar to building "ordinary" city houses (see next page). Hardest was deciding which details I wanted to include and where to stop detailling.
Talking 'bout details: of course it's a matter of time, but in my case it's as well a matter of PC capacities.

On the other hand: Detailling is really fun! So I started with some really low poly models and added some details whenever I was funny.

That's what I did until now: The Ecole Militaire:

... the Trocadero (correctly speaking Palais du Chaillot):

This was built in 1937 and replaced the old Palais du Trocadero (you may remember me mentioning it before). But including historic scenes meant modelling the old Trocadero as well:

Doing this was really lovely... I found a wonderful historic photo showing the Trocadero behind the Eiffel Tower at about 1900:

(I simply love that motive, and I plan to do a render this way...)

Each of those buildings took me about two days. Of course they are far from being good enough to stand alone, but should fit to illustrate my background (just keep in mind that we are talking about huge distances, indeed. The distance from the Trocadero to the Ecole Militaire is about 1,5 km. And the tower itself stays the main topic of course!).
Anyway I tried to model them as accurate as possible (e.g. figuring out sizes and proportions the best I could), so they could easily be improved later if necessary.

Quite hard to do was a building called the "Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac" because of its modernistic style - no right angles, lots of unusual decorative elements:

Another more traditional complex on the opposite border of the Seine called "Palais du Tokyo":

... and as a "finger exercise" the bridge between entitled "Passerelle Debilly" (I love those French people having wonderful names for simple pedestrian bridges ;-):

Next to the "Musée quai Branly" you'll find the Palais de l'Alma, followed by the "Centre Spirituel et Culturel Orthodoxe Russe" - which gives a nice ensemble of landmarks (Palais du Tokyo on top left):

(You may recognize my Eiffel Tower dummy being improved a little by the use of wireframe modifier; but of course it's still a dummy ;-)

To be continued...
