The HMS Victory project

The lower gun deck

This is the place where main aggression was done... 30 cannons to 32 lbs each.
Also most of the "ordinary" sailors lived here - hanging their hammocks whereever some space was found.

You'll recognize as well the capstans (at least the lower parts - the Victory capstans reached two decks), so that means that main work for serving the anchors was as well done here.

(I found a quite interesting article about serving anchors and dealing with the huge cables here. I never thought this was so complicated - thanks a lot, Daniel!

And - most important - here was the place for the chain pumps being served.
Some detail information: There were two kinds of pumps built in the ship:
one kind dragging the water outside (chain pumps), e.g. if the ship was damaged,
the other kind (elmtree pumps) were meant to pump some water inside for e.g. fire fighting.
One of those elmtree pumps was located on each deck; but here's the place to serve the chain pumps.

For some additional information about the chain pumps, watch this short clip from Southampton University.

You'll find as well the rudder mechanic here - watch last render.
